xa xa
Viện Đại Học
thấp thoáng trong sương mờ
Dã Quỳ trải thảm vàng
bâng khuâng chiều nắng nhạt
lữ khách thẫn thờ
mơ mộng
ngắm Xuân Hương
Ôi! Ngôi nhà thân thương
có người
ngồi bên khung cửa sổ
như hoàng hôn lặng lẽ
thả hồn vào mộng vào mơ
cùng tôi
chung dệt mối tình thơ

BÀI THƠ KHÔNG TỰA
The just Cause Flag
Freedom is like salt
Happiness is like sugar
When you have big meals with good food
It’s difficult to understand the value of a grain of salt, of sugar
I live in South Viet Nam
Looking at the flow of life
Blooming and withering
How many seasons
Two Republics
A long and bloody war
I put my best in the fight
To protect freedom
Under the flag
Yellow background and three red stripes
Unfortunately in our ranks
There were so few Ngo Quang Truong, Nguyen Khoa Nam
But too many Nguyen VinhNghi, Nguyen Van Toan
To make our troops lose their faith
Our people become discouraged
People with a kind heart
Just shake their head in frustration
Then the U.S., our former ally
Now changes its stand
Forgetting its previous promises
Leaving the “advance outpost of the free world”
To its loss
The enemy put me in exile
While they shout from the housetops in celebration
The scholars, students
Who fled in the jungles in the past
Dreaming of paradise on earth
Now sit on the stage looking up
“Paradise is within reach”
Mother Hai
In the past dug secret undergrounds to feed the cadre
Now is joyous
“They are here now, I’ll have a good future”
Mrs. Tam having her son killed during the battle of Dong Xoai
Rejoices when receiving the certificate “Mother of the war hero”
The composer, the writer, the poet
During the war fought against the “unreasonable war”
(bybackstabbing the Republic of Viet Nam soldiers)
Now hold out their pens
Begging to write praising the new regime
The group of youngsters deep hiding in the past
At the rear
Turning pale face when talking about the battlefield
Now admit to “having loved in secret the revolution
Even from before dawn”
The common people
When meeting with the soldiers either like or don’t like
Sometimes curse
“I curse even the President
Not talking about you, simple soldiers”
Now clap their hands hesitantly
But their eyes do not look straight
They have not yet the definite answer
They prefer to wait a little more
After a few years
The honeymoon is over
Now full of tears
And choked with sobs
The scholars running into the jungle those years past
Become angry saying they are betrayed
Put out their protest
Some are put in the detention camp Chi Hoa
Others are in house arrest
Become good for nothing husbands
The dreamt paradise falling down
Mother Hai, now familiar with sorghum, tapioca and sweet potato
Like the people of the North
The cadre she fed them in the secret underground
Have given orders to arrest her several times
But she can’t make both ends meet
How can she have rice to pay the taxes
Mrs. Tam holding the certificate “Mother of the war hero”
With an empty stomach
From one place to the other everyone is so poor
The human feeling is rarer than before
She goes out to her son’s grave to root out the weeds
And cries in silence
The literature figures
Once anti-war
Justify “bow to circumstances”
Try to squeeze their heart
To look like the Lenin, Karl Marx disciples
But with the poems, the musical lyrics
Familiar with the free and unruly style
How can they bear the shackles
And regret the time with open skies
When they could write at will
The vile and boastful youngsters
Are accepted by the new regime
And they toil for the national defense
Or become the assault youth
Working without compensation in the deep jungles
With burned skin
And starvation
The common people
Once cursing at will
Now stay quiet as mice
They dare not open their mouth
Some who slip a word
Get “imprisoned without sentence”
When the cadre praise “uncle Ho”, the Party
They raise their voice in their cheers
Applaud loudly
But inside they wish to relive the ancient time
After April 30th, sorrowful and shameful
Are the families of the Republic of Viet Nam service-men
One gets his house taken
Another one gets his land seized
Their children get kicked out of school
Their wives lose their jobs
They, themselves, get imprisoned without trace
At the meetings, the cadre mock them ironically
In the streets they are side-long glanced at
When all the rice fields join the collectivity
Rice, sugar, fabric, milk are sold according to the criterion
Factories, companies, manufactures
Get nationalized
The local police full of authorities
Realize the policy of household registration
The common people are beyond endurance
And yet they dare not lament or complaint
Then only do the families of the Republic of Viet Nam soldiers
Get the sympathetic look
They think of their sons, their husbands, their fathers
In the communist detention camps
They feel proud and raise their heads high
Today, in the open sky
I can see the yellow flag with three red stripes
Fluttering in the wind
I want to cry aloud
I want to shout
“This is happiness! This is freedom!”
That once had disappeared from my hands
And I had to bury my most beautiful years
Of my life
In detention camps scattered all over
The country
My relatives, my people
Those who could not escape
For several tens of years
Have to bear the sorrows
Resentment and disgrace
When the country gets destroyed
Mother Viet Nam! Your children in exile
Have recognized their mistakes
And, in secret, fight
To restore you one day
There will be more difficulties
To re-conquer the fatherland
From the hands of the covetous and wicked communists
But look! Fluttering in the wind
Like the previous days
The yellow flag with three red stripes
Today shows the bright right cause
No need for words
Talking over or interpretation
I stand still, my heart elated
Our flag is still there
Oh! Fatherland! There will be someday!
